This month’s artist spotlight goes to Patrick Jones, a traditional and digital artist who specializes in fantasy and sci-fi illustration. His mastery of form and his delicate use of detail is reminiscent of famed painting duo Boris and Julie Vallejo. In fact, Boris himself wrote the forward to Jones’ book on oil painting techniques available on Amazon.
Patrick doesn’t just paint; he shapes stories and worlds, rising above the tired tropes and props which have flooded the fantasy art market lately. His figures have gesture, passion, and intrigue, and the warmth in his soft yellow and green hues pays homage to his inspiration, Frank Frazetta. Everything about his work is a throw-back to bygone era.
A native of of Ireland, Patrick now lives in Australia working with major clients like Lucasfilm and Disney. He offers online e-books and tutorials for aspiring artists and teaches a painting class at the Technical and Furthering Education campuses along the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Art is an essential part of my life, paid or unpaid. I’d rather live in an old shack and paint than live in a palace and be king.” – Patrick Jones
His dedication to the craft shows. I especially love the dewy skin tones and the lost-and-found edges of his atmospheric backgrounds. You can see more of his incredible artwork at pjartworks.com.
